Fiddler on The Roof is based the folk tales of Sholom Aleichem, Yiddish literature's most beloved authour. He expressed the lives,
the dreams and the aspirations of his people living in those small ramshackle, poverty-striken Jewish villages of Czarist Russia.
His folk tales captured the hunger, the humour and the irony of a people maintaining an absurd pride amid desperate circumstances.
